firefox 0.9.1 and thunderbird 0.7.1

Firefox 0.9.1 and Thunderbird 0.7.1 have been released! Both releases contain bugfixes for some of the biggest bugs in their 0.9 and 0.7 releases. You really should check them out. Unfortunately, the fix for what I think is a conversion blocker (bug 246078) didn’t make it into 0.9.1. I’m confident it’ll get fixed by Firefox … Continue reading “firefox 0.9.1 and thunderbird 0.7.1”

we’ve moved to a new host

After wanting to move away from Network Solutions for a long time now, I’ve finally moved my ebrahim.org domain over to pair Networks. After wanting to move away from Network Solutions for a long time now, I’ve finally moved my ebrahim.org domain over to pair Networks.

One of the things I get at pair that I never had before was a decent managed web hosting platform, with CGI, PHP, and other goodies. So now I’ve moved away from Blogger and set up Movable Type. While Blogger is great, it just doesn’t provide the same flexiblity as MT does, particularly when it comes to advanced features.

One of the best things about this new setup is that I can also create subdomains of ebrahim.org, which I wasn’t able to do before. I’m excited about this. I know most of you who have been with decent web hosting services have been able to do this for a long time now; but what can I say? NSI sucks.

The next step is to move my ebrahim.org registration away from NSI, probably to either Gandi or pairNIC.

In the meantime, enjoy the new MT-powered blog. Now you no longer need to register in order to comment with a name! The only one thing I wasn’t able to do was import comments from Blogger. If anyone knows of a good way to do this, please let me know.

Right now I’m still pretty much using the MT defaults, with a few minor additions and changes to the templates. Sooner or later the blog will get more pretty as I customise things further. Bear with me while that happens. 🙂

movable type or wordpress?

I now have a real web hosting account with pair.com, and am looking to move my blog there at some point in the very near future. However, I still haven’t decided whether to use Movable Type or WordPress. I’m looking for some input on this decision, and would really appreciate it if people could comment about their experiences with either one or the other, and try and guide me here as to their relative merits.

I should note that I am not interested in hearing arguments about licensing issues. I’m already aware of them, and have decided that they don’t matter to me. I am however very interested in hearing your comments about technical merits, or feature comparisons. Right now I’m leaning towards MovableType 3.0, but that could change.

I should also note that I’m somewhat tempted to stick with Blogger, but the lack of RDF feeds and post categories is somewhat of a damper on that sentiment.

help me learn c++

I’m looking for a good book which will help me learn C++. I’d appreciate it if people could make recommendations (and preferably back them up), so I can make a well informed choice. I’m looking for something that’s aimed at a beginner, but that will teach me both C++ as well as more general programming … Continue reading “help me learn c++”

i have some extra gmail invites for you

See, I told you that I’d let you guys know when I had extra Gmail invites. However, because I’m feeling somewhat miserly, I’m not going to let you guys get them without doing at least a little bit of work. See, I told you that I’d let you guys know when I had extra Gmail invites. However, because I’m feeling somewhat miserly, I’m not going to let you guys get them without doing at least a little bit of work.

So, in order to get a Gmail invite from me, you’ll have to write a short story (of at least 300 words) incorporating Firefox, a ring, a banana, an expired flight ticket, and Ralph Nader.

I have at least 3 invites to give out for those who write these short stories. Depending on the quality of entries, I may decide to give out more than 3 invites (since I have a little bit of a stockpile). Winners are determined at my discretion.

In order to submit your story, post a comment with the short story in it. If you post anonymously, you must include your email address (to which your invite will be sent if you win). If your Blogger profile does not include contact information, you also must include your email address in the comment.

Entries will close at 23:59 CDT on Sunday June 20th.

firefox 0.9!

Firefox 0.9 is out! Go forth and download. Yours truly has also been slightly bumped up the credits list, which is always nice. 🙂 Hopefully blog updates will become more frequent and insightful once I’m settled into my new place this weekend.

graduation & related things

It’s official. I’m now a graduate of the University of Chicago. Today was convocation, so I was conferred my degree along with the other 1100 or so seniors who graduated with me. I’ve had a very hectic week, and have been moving to my new apartment. I vacated my dorm room today, and have moved all my stuff over to the new place, but haven’t yet settled in. My parents are in Chicago right now for my convocation, and are here until the 17th, so I’m going to be staying with them until they leave, at which point I will begin living it up in my new apartment.

My blog is likely to be pretty quiet over the next few days, as until I’m settled into my new apartment fully I’m just going to be too busy to really sit down and blog. Usually I spend a fair amount of time on Bugzilla every day as well, but even that hasn’t been happening lately. Hopefully once my life has settled down again, I’ll be able to pick up where I left off.

In any case, the days of aebrahim logging in from palevsky-223-084.rh.uchicago.edu or palevsky-223-041.rh.uchicago.edu are over.

i’m back, and done with university!

I’m back. No, I didn’t forget to update my blog, I’ve just been very busy with university over the last week or so, and with finals. Now everything is over, and all my grades are in, and I’ve completed all my degree requirements! Now everything is over, and all my grades are in, and I’ve completed all my degree requirements! I won’t officially graduate until June 12th, but now I’m all set. So now this is what my next week will look like…

Some of you might be wondering what exactly I’ve been working on over the last four years. While describing that in its entirety on my blog would just be impossible, I’m putting my BA Thesis online in case any of my readers want to take a look at it. I think that the topic is very relevant today, and has important implications for our future. So here it is:

An Examination of the Effectiveness of the United Nations at Protecting the Interests of Smaller Nations within a Realist Unipolar World

My BA Thesis

Comments on my thesis by Professor Charles Lipson, Undergraduate Chair of Political Science at the University of Chicago.

The thesis is by no means perfect, and there are many improvements that could be made, and many sections that could be expanded. However, even in its current form, I’m pretty happy with it, and think it’s worth sharing. Maybe one day I’ll expand this into something a lot more comprehensive.

Comments are welcome.

infrequent blogging

I’m not blogging as much as I do usually. This is because finals are looming. A quick summary of my final papers schedule: Friday 28th – 12 pages Monday 31st – 15 pages Tuesday 1st – 6 pages Wednesday 2nd – n pages, where n is as yet undetermined (I will find out tomorrow). Friday 28th – 12 pages
Monday 31st – 15 pages
Tuesday 1st – 6 pages
Wednesday 2nd – n pages, where n is as yet undetermined (I will find out tomorrow).

This is all in addition to the 33 pages I submitted last Friday, and the 8 pages this last Monday. So yeah, things are looking pretty tight for me.
